SAVE THE OCEAN + PROTECT YOUR SKIN
90% of Carribean Reefs have disappeared since 1980.
The next time you swim in the deep blue waters, you aren’t swimming in just seawater. You are submerging yourself in about 82,000 chemicals from personal care products that have made their way into the beautiful seas.
Chemical sunscreens harm our oceans, are toxic to coral, and poison sea life. 14,000 tons of sunscreen lotion finds its way into our oceans annually.

FOR THE OCEAN
When the tide comes in, chemical-covered sand is carried out into the sea, which leads to ocean contamination. When it rains, the sunscreen residue can seep underneath the sand, where sea turtles lay eggs. Your shower rinses the oxybenzone from your skin down the drain and out to the sea. Flushing the toilet? Oxybenzone is detected in urine within 30 minutes of application.
FOR YOUR SKIN
Chemical sunscreens accumulate in the body, breast milk, and have even been linked to hormonal disruptions, low sperm count, and breast cancer. Harmful chemicals found in your sunscreen could be doing you more harm than good. Choose a safer sunscreen with non-nano zinc oxide.
KNOW YOUR LABELS
Avoid Oxybenzone (found in 3,500 sunscreens), Octinoxate, and Octocrylene. Organic doesn’t mean safe for the environment. Plant-based oils can be toxic to reef organisms, especially arthropods (lobsters, crabs, shrimp). Neem, eucalyptus, and lavender oils have increased relative toxicity to invertebrates (sponges and corals). Beeswax can be contaminated with a variety of industrial fungicides and insecticides.
BRANDS TO AVOID
Aveeno, Banana Boat, Panama Jack, Coppertone, Hawaiian Tropic, and Neutrogena. (to name a few)
Go natural
Coconut oil has a natural SPF 4 which blocks 75% off UV radiation and contains antioxidants that help protect the skin from harmful radiation. 75% of protection is about 45 minutes of sun exposure. Coconut oil will help your skin tan faster while keeping it moisturized, which means less burning or peeling. That low amount of SPF isn’t sufficient for a long day in the sun or if you are sunbathing somewhere tropical, add red raspberry seed oil which has an SPF 25.

INGREDIENTS TO AVOID
Oxybenzone | This chemical absorbs and filters UV light and is a common ingredient in sunscreen, despite causing relatively high rates of skin allergies. It also penetrates the skin at very high rates and acts like estrogen once it enters your bloodstream, disrupting your endocrine system, reducing sperm production, and potentially causing endometriosis.
Octinoxate | Octinoxate is also readily absorbed via the skin and also disrupts your endocrine system by mimicking hormonal activity that can affect the reproductive system and thyroid.
Retinyl Palmitate | A form of Vitamin A, this chemical is used in a large number of sunscreens and SPF- containing moisturizers and lip balms because it is believed to slow skin aging. But, when exposed to sunlight, it has been shown to speed the development of malignant cells and skin tumors because UV rays cause the compound to break down and produce destructive free radicals.
Homosalate | This common ingredient also helps sunscreen penetrate your skin and disrupts hormone balances. It can accumulate in your body faster than your body can detoxify it through your liver, lingering in your body and increasing your toxic burden.
Octocrylene | This is yet another ingredient that is easily absorbed by the skin and produces free radicals that can cause mutations and damage cells when exposed to UV rays.
Parabens | Parabens are a group of synthetic compounds commonly added to cosmetics and body products because they prevent the growth of fungus and bacteria. They are dangerous because, like so many ingredients in this list, they disrupt hormone functions, potentially leading to increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity. Five common types of parabens have been banned in the EU, and the FDA is under pressure to ban them in the U.S.
